The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic greatly affected healthcare workers, both physically and psychologically, by increasing their workload and stress. This may also have increased their risk of occupational injuries. This study analyzed workers' compensation (WC) claims among California nursing care facility workers during 2019–2021, to assess the impact of the pandemic on occupational injury risk.

The UCSF Health Workforce Research Center on Long-Term Care (UCSF HWRC), a dynamic hub of policy-oriented research, has received a five-year renewal from the US Health Resource and Services Administration (HRSA). Established in 2013, this marks our third multi-year cooperative agreements with the US National Center for Health Workforce Analysis in the US Bureau of Health Workforce at HRSA.

In case you missed it…. UCSF HWRC also received a grant from the National Institutes of Health to establish the AWARD (Advancing Workforce Analysis and Research for Dementia) Network to advance research on the direct care workforce and other health professionals that serve people living with dementia through programs and activities to create a strong community of researchers.

From 2011 to 2021, the direct care workforce added nearly 1.5 million new jobs, growing from 3.2 million workers to 4.7 million. As a result of low wages and part-time hours, median annual earnings for direct care workers were only $21,700. These and other new data points are now available from UCSF HWRC partner PHI’s “Direct Care Workers in the United States: Key Facts.”
